European Championships Update: The IOM flat green bowling team of Lesley Keenan, Clive McGreal, Bernice McGreal and Tom Keenan represented the Island at the 8th European Team Championships in Portugal..

In preparation for the tournament, the team, sponsored by Manx Gas, competed in the warm up event the  "European Open Amateur Week" and took third position competing against members of the Portuguese national team on their home green. Each player received a handsome trophy presented by Amadeu Gil da Rocha, Managing Director of Vilamoura Lawn Bowls complex and Portuguese national team skip.

The team also took up the kind offer of the Santo Antonio Lawn Bowling Club for a warm up game and in a highly competitive match the IOM side won all 3 disciplines to run out 3-0 winners. The Santo Antonio club put on an excellent lunch for the team and their generous hospitality was much appreciated by all. President Tom Keenan was presented with a fine trophy from club representative Paul Johnson. A big thanks to Paul and all Santo Antonio members for a memorable days bowling and great hospitality.

In the main tournament the team had some mixed results, the star performers were the Ladies pairing of Lesley Keenan and Bernice McGreal who played 7 matches and lost only 2.  The highlight for the Ladies was a well deserved draw against the defending Champions Scotland.  In a fiercely competitive match the Island team won the first set, but Scotland managed to take the second for a share of the points.

The standard was extremely high, with most of the opposition fielding members of their 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games squads giving the IoM team, sponsored by Manx Gas, the opportunity to compete at the very highest level and gain valuable experience for future international events.

Below are photos of the team with Portugal and England.

Re-Arranged Matches

Several members have sought a ruling in regards to re-arranged matches and have asked for clarity in this regard.

It is impossible to accommodate all members with different priorities much as we would like consensus to decide these matters.

So, the Committee have decided that the only fair way to resolve these conflicts is to adhere strictly to the League Rules that cover this eventuality, therefore: in accordance with Rule 10 of the Singles League:

10.  Players wishing to re-arrange a match must seek agreement from the opposition and fill in the “Match Rearrangement Form” signed by both players.  Matches should be played before, or a maximum of 3 weeks after the scheduled date.  Failure to do so will result in the match being awarded against the player who sought the rearrangement.

and Rule 11 of the Pairs League:

11.  Teams wishing to re-arrange a match must seek agreement from the opposition and fill in the “Match Rearrangement Form” signed by both skips.  Matches should be played before, or a maximum of 3 weeks after the scheduled date.  Failure to do so will result in the match being awarded against the team who sought the rearrangement.  Where possible, re-arranged matches should be played on the original allocated rink.

How does this ruling affect matches?

In essence although we would like all matches to be played as soon as possible the following are the absolute cut off points for matches with regard to the League Rules.

Original Match Date:
Singles   Game 10 11th July must be played by 1st August
Game 11 18th July must be played by 8th August
Game 12 25th July must be played by 15th August
Game 13 1st August must be played by 22nd August

Pairs    Game 10 13th July   must be played by 3rd August
Game 11 20th July   must be played by 10th August
Game 12 27th July must be played by 17th August
Game 13 3rd August must be played by 24th August
Game 14 10th August must be played by 31st August
Game 15 17th August must be played by 7th September

Any matches prior and subsequent to these dates not having been played within the 3 week deadline the points will be awarded against the Player/Team who sought the rearrangement.

He was joined by colleagues June Kelly, Derek Crellin and Ray Kniveton. Terry was able to tell Club members that he also rolled the very first bowl of the season when the Club was first established in 1977.

Official Opening of Green: This Saturday 30th April at 2.00pm sees the the official opening of the green for the 2011 season. The first bowl of the season will be delivered by Mr. Brian Stowell, Chairman of the Onchan Commissioners.

A buffet lunch will be provided and we will have various fun events and raffle prizes. A challenge for bowlers and non-bowlers alike, will be the target mat and driving range, with a prize for the highest recorded score on the day.

We encourage members to bring along family and friends, for what will be an informal fun day out. Lets all hope the weather will be kind on the day, but we intend to go ahead whatever the conditions.

Would any members providing catering for the event, deliver to the clubhouse around 1.00pm. We look forward to seeing you all there on the day!

Green Update: Monday 11th April, the green is now ready for members to use, the water and power have now been restored and all equipment has been returned to the hut. There may still be times when the green will be closed for short periods outside Club meeting times for specific maintenance, eg. Billy intended to cut the grass this afternoon weather permitting. Any new members requiring a key to the Clubhouse should see Tom.

Green Update: I have been up to the green this afternoon, Monday 4th April 2011 and spoke directly to the greenkeeper Billy, he informs me that in his estimation the green will not be ready for play for a further 2 weeks as essential maintenance is still being carried out. Members are reminded that season tickets run from May to September and that play before that date is a concession to IOMFGBC members and is conditional to the completion of the maintenance program. I would hope that the green should be ready for play by Saturday 16th April. Check back for updates.

Leagues Reminder: Just a quick reminder to all members who have still to return their league entry forms for the 2011 season that the closing date is the 2nd April, get your forms in quickly. Maintenance is still being carried out on the green and it is anticipated that it will not be completed till mid April.

2011 Season News: The first Club meeting of the season will be Saturday 23rd April 2.15pm.  We will try and keep the program for Saturdays varied and interesting and we would appreciate any ideas from members on how best to achieve this. Initially we will have a mixture of Round Robins and Australian Pairs and we will play one Competition a month on Saturdays.

All members should have received their new season letters by now outlining the plans for the coming season in detail. Any member wishing to enter the pairs league but who does not have a partner should let anyone on the Committee know and we will attempt to team them up. We hope to see you all on the 23rd. We will update the website regularly so check back for the latest updates and keep an eye on the "Courier" for Club announcements.

Rule Change 2011 Season: The law enabling the winner of an end to have the option of giving away the jack has been scrapped for the coming season. This follows a similar move for the Indoor game.

An exception will be when an extra end is required, this will result in a toss of the coin giving the winner the choice to give away or retain the jack.

The target mat was very popular and the cake and candy stall completely sold out.
