League Winners

Alistair Irving and Ken Edwards of ARK took the title on the last league night of the season with a hard fought victory over TwoPhil, the Tartan Terrors came second. Alistair and Ken were delighted with their win and asked for a special mention for the third member of their squad Ray Osborne.

Match Reports 10th August

First placed Tartan Terrors faced second placed ARK in a possible title showdown in the manx2.com Pairs League. ARK duo Alistair Irving and Ken Edwards pulled out all the stops and took the first set comfortably.  In the second the Terrors fought back but could only manage a draw to hand the match to ARK, who now top the table and need only to win their last match to claim the title. The Clerics had a good victory over the Pink Ladies, Colin Ring and Stewart Stevenson taking the match 2-1 in the tie-break.

John Wilcock and Brian Doherty continued their excellent form securing all 3 points for Willdo in their contest with TwoPhil. The Odd couple and the Dragons also secured maximum points in their ties.

Match Reports 20th July

Variable weather conditions added to the drama at Onchan Park for the manx2.com pair’s league.  In the match between the Tartan Terrors and Phil Smith and Harry Shaw’s HP, the Terrors had a comfortable first set win. Then the rain started with HP adapting better to the conditions and mounting an impressive comeback.  The Terrors just managed to hold on and secure the points to maintain their position at the top of the league. With ARK having no game this week the Likely Lads had an opportunity to secure second place but Michael Estella and Flo Price had other ideas, taking the points in the tie-break.

Phil Connolly and Phil Addy played consistent bowls to take both sets from the Rising Stars and continue their progression in their first season. An impressive performance from Bobby Price and Clive McGreal saw them move into second place taking all 3 points from the Dragons. Willdo consolidated their position in the table in a hard fought match against the Clerics taking the points in the tie-break.  

Match Reports 13th July

Tartan Terrors pair of Tom Keenan and Stephen McIntyre had a comfortable win over Rising Stars Wyn Kewley and James Teare and remain top of the manx2.com pairs league. ARK’s title aspirations were tested to the limit in their match against Brian Doherty and John Wilcock.  The first set was tied and an epic battle in the second saw the tide turn against Alistair Irving and Ray Osborne with Willdo pulling out all the stops to take the match.

Eric Maddocks and Matt Quayle played some fantastic bowls in their contest with the Celts yet found themselves on the wrong side of a 2-1 defeat.

Match Reports 29th June

Phil Addy and Phil Connolly and David Quirk and Jimmy Sansom could not be split in the first set and shared the points after a 6-6 tie. In the second set the more experienced Likely Lads began to read the green better and pulled away to take the second set and the tie.

A similar situation in the match between Harry Shaw and Phil Smith and Ken Edwards and Ray Osborne. Again one set won and one shared but a tight high quality contest going in favour of ARK who maintain their title challenge with an excellent win.

The Celts got off to a storming start against the Tartan Terrors, Bobby Price in particular reading a very difficult rink much better than his opponent, allowing the Celts to take the first set comfortably. A much closer second set followed and it was 1-1 going in to the tie break. The Terrors took the first end and had a match wining lie in the second before a tremendous drive by Clive McGreal leveled the tie break. In the decider the Terrors played a tight end to close out the match and ran out 2-1 winners.

Match Reports 22nd June

The Odd Couple had a narrow tie break victory over TwoPhil this week in the manx2.com pairs league. The Dragons enhanced their reputation as tie break specialists with another final set win over Eric Maddocks and Matt Quayle's United. Defending champions the Tartan Terrors took the points from the Likely Lads and move into second place.

Alistair Irving and Ken Edwards hold on to top spot in the league with a decisive victory over the Rising Stars. In an epic tussle Brian Doherty and John Wilcock battled for the points against an in form Harry Shaw and Phil Smith. HP played the more consistent bowls however and managed to take maximum points.

Match Reports 15th June

In a tight match the Clerics duo of Paul Dougherty and Stewart Stevenson emerged victorious over the Celts Bobby Price and Clive McGreal after a nail biting tie break finish. The tie break was also required to settle the match between David Quirk and Jimmy Sansom of the Likely Lads and the Pink Ladies, the Lads edging it 2-1.

Willdo pair Brian Doherty and John Wilcock put on an impressive display and were comfortable winners against the Rising Stars taking maximum points. Bernice and Michael McGreal of the Dragons continue their rise up the table with yet another tie break decider. They had a comfortable win in the first set against Phil Addy and Phil Connolly. TwoPhil however, mounted an impressive fight back and stormed away with the second set 14-2 to send the match into the tie break. The match could have gone either way at 1-1 in the decider, but the Dragons held their nerve and shaded it 2-1. After a night of tie break tensions ARK remain at the top of the manx2.com pairs league with the Likely Lads in second place but with a game in hand.

Match Reports 8th June

ARK go top of the table this week, Ken Edwards and Alistair Irving putting on an impressive display in a tight match against the Celts. The Likely Lads again took maximum points, mastering a difficult green better than Colin Ring and Paul Dougherty of the Clerics. TwoPhil consolidated their league position taking 3 points against United in an excellent contest.

Pairs in action

Match of the evening was the battle between the Pink Ladies duo of Lesley Keenan and Joyce Ogden and Odd Couple pair Flo Price and Michael Estella. After losing the first set the Ladies stormed back to take the match to the tie-break. Honours were shared in the first 2 ends and the Ladies where in a match winning lie till Michael Estella drew shot with the last wood of the tie to take the match.

Match Reports 1st June

In the blazing sunshine at Onchan Park the Likely lads duo of David Quirk and Jimmy Sansom continued their excellent early season form to consolidate their position at the top of the manx2.com pairs league. Alistair Irving and Ken Edwards of ARK, battled all the way in this intriguing tie that went all the way to the tie break with an impressive display of bowling skill that could have went either way. The 1 point picked up by ARK keeps them in contention at joint second place in the league.

Odd Couple pairing, Flo Price and Michael Estella climb up the table with an excellent performance against the Clerics. A warm welcome to new member Colin Ring who made his debut for the Clerics alongside Stewart Stevenson. The Celts continue to impress with another fine performance against Willdo, Bobby and Clive ready to pounce on any slip from the teams above. The ever improving Dragons put the Pink Ladies to the sword with a deserved 2-1 victory, definitely a team to watch. The Tartan Terrors had to battle for the points against Eric Maddocks and Matt Quayle's United, but managed a win in the tie break.

In a closely contested match the Rising Stars, lost out to Harry and Phil 2-0, but they continue to show promise and it won't be long before Wyn Kewley and James Teare take a significant scalp.

Match Reports 25th May

Defending Champions Tartan Terrors got their season underway this week with matches against TwoPhil and the Pink Ladies. The Terrors won both games taking maximum points. Match of the night was a titanic struggle between the Clerics and Dragons. A fantastic fight back saw the Dragons recover to take the match to a tie break which they eventually won 2-1 to take the tie.

The Smugglers had an excellent win against the Celts taking maximum points. Jimmy Sansom and David Quirk of the Likely Lads consolidated their position at the top of the table with an impressive 3 point victory over Willdo. ARK pairing of Alistair Irving and Ken Edwards continued their early season form with a decisive win over the Odd Couple to go into second place in the league.

Match Reports 18th May

The manx2.com pairs league this week involved some interesting ties with early season league leaders the Celts facing HP pairing Harry Shaw and Phil Smith. Clive McGreal and Bobby Price got off to a tremendous start going 10-0 ahead in the first set, but a remarkable turnaround saw them losing the set 11-10. They won the next set to level the tie and secured the match with a tense tie break victory.

The early exchanges between the Odd Couple and Willdo saw Flo and Michael take a commanding first set lead, but Willdo recovered to take the next and the tie break to emerge victorious.

Dragons,Michael and Bernice McGreal stormed to a convincing first set lead over ARK but Ken and Alistair recovered well to win the match 2-1

In an intriguing clash, TwoPhil faced the formidable Pink Ladies who continued last seasons form by winning the first set 6-4 and followed it up with a 7-3 second set to take all 3 points.

Jimmy Sansom and David Quirk of the Likely Lads played consistent bowls to emerge with a 2 set victory over the Smugglers and took all 3 points.

Match Reports 11th May

The first manx2.com pairs league games of the season got underway on Wednesday evening with some evenly matched teams battling for the points. The Celts pairing of Bobby Price and Clive McGreal were the only team to take maximum points, with a 3-0 win over Rising Stars Wyn Kewley and James Teare. The Dragons, Bernice and Michael McGreal battled hard to take their match to a tie break but lost out to John Wilcock and Brian Dohery of Willdo.

ARK had a 2-1 win over United after an epic struggle that again was decided in the tie break. Harry Shaw and Phil Smith of HP, battled to the very last wood but just lost out to Jimmy Sansom and David Quirk of the Likely Lads by a single shot.

The surprise result of the night came when new pairing TwoPhil, triumphed over the indoor champs Paul Dougherty and Stewart Stevenson of the Clerics. Phil Addy and Phil Connolly played some tremendous bowls to win their first ever match and have sent out a warning shot to the rest of the competitors. TwoPhil are a welcome addition to the league, well done Phil and Phil. The league table should be on this page by the end of the week.

Match Reports 28th July

The  Tartan Terrors wrapped up the manx2.com Pairs League on Tuesday night with a game to spare, but all was still to play for in an exciting battle for runner up on Wednesday evening. The Pink Ladies, in second spot, had to match or better the result of third placed Kestrels to retain second place.

The Ladies, Joyce Ogden and Lesley Keenan had a difficult match against the Likely Lads, while Ken Edwards and Alistair Irving of the Kestrels faced United. The Pink Ladies could not produce the consistent form that they had showed throughout the season and lost both sets to finish third in the table. The Kestrels just did enough to win the tie break and take the points they needed to finish in second spot. Well done Alistair Irving and Ken Edwards.

The Clerics finished their season on a high, winning against Willdo, an excellent first season for Stewart Stevenson and Paul Dougherty. Phil Smith and Flo Price also ended their season on a high taking the scalps of the league winners in the tie break.

Congratulations to Tom Keenan and Stephen McIntyre of the Tartan Terrors in winning the first ever manx2.com Pairs League. Thanks also to all the competitors who made the competition so exciting and successful.
