History of The Club

The Isle of Man Flat Green Bowling Club's home is located at Onchan Pleasure Park in front of the Boating Lake. The Club is the only Flat Green on the Island,  which is  predominantly a Crown Green Bowling environment.

Established in 1977 and officially opened by the Chairman of the Onchan Commissioners in that year. The Club should have been opened in 1976, however, too much fertiliser was put on the lawn causing the green to burn and was unplayable until the following season.

To celebrate the Islands Year of Sports in 1985 there was a challenge match between two bowling legends. David Bryant from England and Willie Wood from Scotland, David Bryant eventually edging a very tight match. It was a display of bowling to grace any club.

The Club has also hosted many teams from around the UK and Channel Islands for challenge matches and is affiliated to World Bowls and is a member country of the European Bowls Union. The Club has represented the Island at many International competitions and prestigious bowling events including the European Team Championships and the Commonwealth Games.

Thanks to Jimmy Sansom we have just come into possession of some old coloured photographs of the challenge match between David Bryant and Willie Wood and other pictures of their visit.
