This was short lived however and the opposition of Matt Quayle, James Teare, Ray Osborne and Phil Smith came from behind with a steady display of team play to lift the trophy.
Island Championships Finals Day
The finalists had to endure the worst conditions of the season with constant rain making it very difficult to grip the bowls. Despite this the players put on a highly entertaining series of matches for the appreciative crowd sheltering in the Club house.
Men's Singles: The remarkable Stephen McIntyre won the Men's Singles title for the fourth year running beating Phil Smith in the final.
Ladies Singles: Bernice McGreal triumphed in an epic match against Lesley Keenan with little to split the pair in a highly entertaining match.

Men's Pairs: Clive and Michael McGreal took the title in difficult conditions against Alistair Irving and Ken Edwards.

Onchan Commissioners Triples
Poor weather added to the drama as 5 teams battled for the title in difficult conditions. At the end only chalks separated the top teams with the trophy going to the trio of Phil Connolly, Michael Estella and Alistair Irving.

Onchan Commissioners kindly donated 3 salvers along with the cup as a permanent souvenir to the delighted winners.

President's Cup Final
The final was contested by defending champion Stephen McIntyre and challenger Lesley Keenan. In one of the most remarkable matches of the season, Lesley stormed to a 19-4 lead needing only 2 shots to take the title. Stephen dug deep however and brought all his experience to bear winning end after end in a remarkable fight back.

The gap proved too great even for Stephens’s ability and Lesley finally got the 2 shots required to take the title 21-14. Congratulations to both players for a tremendous final.

Home Internationals
Members from England, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man squared off in this new competition at Onchan Park. Poor weather made for difficult conditions but all enjoyed a friendly but competitive pairs tournament. The final was between Scotland's Alistair Irving and Brian Doherty and IOM's Jimmy Sansom and David Quirk.

Brian Doherty was a sight to behold in full Scottish regalia and played exceptionally well throughout the tournament. The sun appeared for the final and shone on the Manx pairing with Sanson and Quirk building an early lead and defending it well to lift the trophy.

John Ramsey Pairs Quaish Cup
Excellent summer weather and a strong field ensured a fine days bowling at Onchan Park for this event. Two sections played off in round robin format to produce the finalities with Alistair Irving and Eric Maddocks winning their section and Clive McGreal and Wyn Kewley the other.
The final itself produced a tremendous contest with never more than a few shots separating the teams.

A tense penultimate end with the jack in the ditch and Clive with a bowl on the edge set the scene for the final end with only a couple of shots separating the teams. Some excellent bowls from the leads meant the skips had a very tight head to negotiate and with little room to manoeuvre Eric and Alistair held on to their narrow lead to lift the Trophy.
Congratulations to Eric Maddocks and Alistair Irving for lifting the trophy and a special mention to Wyn Kewley and Clive McGreal for reaching their first final with the Club.
Harrison Barometer 2 bowl singles
A competitive field ensured some excellent matches in this 2 bowl event. The semi final quartet of Jimmy Sansom, Joyce Ogden, Tom Keenan and Clive McGreal produced some fine bowls for the spectators.
The final itself was a highly entertaining clash between Jimmy Sansom and Stephen McIntyre. Jimmy got off to a flying start but was unable to pull away completely and some crucial ends won by Stephen put him back in contention. All was still to play for but a couple of vital scores of 2 at the right time swung the match in favour of Stephen. Congratulations to Stephen McIntyre on winning his first trophy of the season.

"Yard Stick" Competition "Gladys Francksen Cup"

The first trophy of the season was won by Jimmy Sansom and Diane Moore who beat Brian Doherty and Alistair Irving in a highly entertaining final. Poor weather added to the excitement with 8 teams of pairs battling both the conditions and each other. After the first round, Brian and Alistair, Diane and Jimmy, Phil Connolly and Joyce Ogden and Bobby Price and John Wilcock all made the semis.
The final itself was played in deteriorating conditions and both teams battled heavy rain and strong winds. Despite this they managed to produce an enthralling final that was appreciated by the spectators.

After some early exchanges in which both sides matched each other, Diane Moore adapted best to the conditions and with good support from Jimmy they surged ahead to a 27-17 victory. Congratulations to Jimmy Sansom and Diane Moore on winning the first trophy of the season and thanks to Alistair and Brian for their contribution to an excellent final.

Harrison Barometer 2 Bowl Singles
Congratulations to Bill Jones who won his first trophy of the season taking the Harrison Barometer in an exiting final against Jimmy Sansom. Both finalists beat some quality opposition on the way to the final and the standard of play was excellent despite the scorching heat. "Playing with only 2 bowls really is a difficult skill to master and Bill found the land more consistently" said beaten finalist Jimmy, always the sportsman.

" I really enjoyed the tournament and I am proud to hold the title" said winner Bill Jones. It is encouraging to see the impact our new members are having on our Club in their first season. Not strictly true of Jimmy of course as the old " black and white" photos in the clubhouse prove. How old is he?

Many thanks to Club Publicity Officer Joyce Ogden for running the tournament so successfully, well done Joyce.
