IOMFGBC | 2015 Trophy Presentation
The season’s finale was held last week as members gathered for the presentation evening dinner held at the Welbeck Hotel. With President Eric Maddocks commanding proceedings the evening was run with just the right balance of reflection on the 2015 season and social enjoyment for the large number of members attending. Eric as always was well turned out for the dinner in his presidential attire which attracted a great deal of interest. The President followed each award with a brief account of the respective competition and memorable shots played on the day.It was the general consensus that perhaps the best encounter of the season came in the Ladies Championship final. This contest between Pam Makin and Bernice McGreal was close fought throughout and with Bernice having a match lie at 20 – 19 Pam produced the delivery of the year to score the two shots required to win her first Ladies championship. It was good to see a number of the other competitions being contested so closely by many of the new members and it came as no surprise when Marilyn Legg, Gary Lee, Daryl Gribbin, Michael Moyer and Karen Slack each won a trophy or two and deserve our applause for some super performances. The other major trophies and league titles each had their own story to tell with many a twist and turn at the end of the season which saw much of the silverware heading to the McGreal household with Clive winning the Men’s championship and Singles League together with the pairs championship and league titles with partners Phil Smith, Mark McGreal and Bernice McGreal.
The players vote for the most improved Player of the Season was again a close affair with a number in the running however it was Barbara Reed who came out on top of the poll to claim a well deserved recognition of her development over the season which was a fair reflection of her approach to practice, coaching and utter determination during the season.
Yardstick Winners were Win Kewley and Clive McGreal pipping the fancied pairing of Ann Watterson and Bernice McGreal in the last match to win the first event of the season.
Harrison 2 Bowl Competition
Harrison 2 Bowl winner Dave Ball defeating Clive McGreal with the final bowl of the final end of the final with scores level. Dave played exceptionally well on the day even if he did have to borrow Ann Watterson’s club shirt for the presentation photo.
John Ramsey Pairs
John Ramsey Pairs winners were Eric Maddocks and Daryl Gribbin with the latter playing in his first season. Their victory over Phil Watterson and Marilyn Legg was a close and well fought battle with Marilyn certainly putting down a marker of her intent to compete for silverware later into the season.
Bill Moultrie Pairs
Bill Moultrie Pairs winners Marilyn Legg and Mike Moyer. It didn’t take long for Marilyn to throw off the disappointment of losing in the previous final to claim this trophy alongside another new member Mike Moyer. Their victory over Barbara Reed and Karen Slack demonstrated the much improved performances of a number of the newer members during the season.
Onchan Commissioners Triples
The Onchan Triples was won by Marilyn Legg, Karen Slack and Gary Lee. Another trophy for the in form Legg alongside Karen Slack and yet another new member Gary Lee. A vote of thanks to the Commissioners for their continued support and attention to the green.
Championship Pairs Ladies Winners Pam Makin and Win Kewley defending their title from 2014 they secured a victory over Barbara Reed and Karen Slack by a score line of just 2 shots.
Championship Pairs Men’s winners were Clive McGreal with yet another new partner Phil Smith. They dominated the early stages of the final against Gary Lee and Dave Moncaster who to their credit never gave up and pulled back well but couldn’t overcome the deficit.
Ladies Champion Pam Makin defeating Bernice McGreal in a thrilling and closely fought final. Possibly the best match of the year with the result resting on the last bowl of Pam to overturn a match winning lie of Bernice to earn her first Ladies title.
Men’s championship winner Clive McGreal secured his first Championship title victory over Phil Smith with a comfortable margin.
IOMFGBC Leagues Sponsored by Dougherty Quinn
The Dougherty Quinn sponsored Daytime Pairs League was won by Bernice and Clive McGreal who battled all the way with Eric Maddocks and Dave Ball (winners in 2014) to pip them for the title.
DQ sponsored Evening Pairs League saw Mark and Clive McGreal snatch an unlikely victory from the grasp of Eric Maddocks and Dave Ball who had it all but sown up with a few fixtures remaining but suffered an end of season melt down to hand the title to Mark and Clive on a superior shots advantage.
DQ Singles League also went down to the wire with Clive McGreal earning a victory over younger son Mark in the final match of the season. Mark undefeated at that stage narrowly lost out to the greater shots advantage built up by his father over the season. Just for good measure the 3rd place and bronze medal went to Bernice thereby keeping it in the family. Again a vote of thanks to our sponsors DQ for their continued support in 2015.
