Dougherty Quinn Flat Green Bowls Leagues Final Placings
The Flat Green Bowls season came to a glorious finale with the completion of the Dougherty Quinn sponsored Singles and Pairs leagues following a summer of intense competition and a lot of enjoyment. Defending his singles title from last year Clive McGREAL led the merit table for the first half of the season holding off the challenge of younger son Mark and fellow pairs partner Martin Paterson both of whom had recently battled out the Club Championship final. However, as the month of August progressed so did the form of Mark McGREAL who came into his own and enjoyed a purple patch of superb displays to string together a number of victories including vital wins over his closest rivals, the evergreen Phil Smith and father Clive McGREAL. Martin Paterson’s challenge for the title came to end when the much improved Pam Makin summoned up a terrific performance to come from behind to claim a memorable victory over Martin in what must be billed as the match of the season. On the final day of the season and having completed his league programme Clive McGREAL was the leader in the clubhouse level on wins and just ahead on shots difference from his son Mark with just one fixture remaining. With Mark playing Martin Paterson in the final match anything but defeat would secure for him the title. Both players demonstrating good form at this stage the standard of play was a joy to watch, however, it was Mark who commanded the contest on this occasion and pulled off a worthy victory to seal the important 3 point win and claim his first DQ league title to get his name on the honours board.
The Dougherty Quinn pairs league had also been keenly contested throughout the summer with many close encounters and hugely enjoyable moments for the members to recall at their leisure. The story for the season being a rerun of last year with defending champions Martin Paterson & Clive McGREAL making much of the early running despite good performances from new pairings Eric Maddocks & Dave Ball and Mark McGREAL & Martin Atkinson. Whilst many of the matches went down to the wire with a number of spirited displays the consistency of the holders proved decisive and sufficient for them to again retain the title. However, a special mention should be made for the pairing of Win Kewley & Pam Makin playing in their last match of the season who brought the unbeaten run of Clive & Martin to an end in producing some of the best bowls played all year. This pairing will surely be a force to be reckoned with next season if they continue to produce performances of such quality.
To complete the season’s round up the Flat Green Daytime Pairs league featured 3 teams who battled hard all season in which any of them could have won the spoils. In the end it was the club president, Eric Maddocks & Dave Ball who pipped the others at the post just edging out Marilyn Legg & Win Kewley into runners up spot with Ann & Phil Watterson a short head adrift in 3rd place. As a footnote to the season the Club was pleased to welcome its new members and offer a note of thanks for the continuing support of its main sponsors Dougherty Quinn together with a commendation for Onchan Commissioners for all their support and efforts to improve the playing facilities for next season.
Members and new players are welcome to attend the weekly coaching sessions which are held on Saturday mornings at the indoor bowls hall of the NSC between 10 am and 12 noon. More details may be obtained from the Secretary on 499714.
